I am a relative newcomer to the joys of cycling. For many years my thing was hill walking in the Lakes, Wales and Scotland, trekking in Nepal, and alpine climbing around Chamonix and Zermatt. This culminated in climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for my 40th birthday. However this all changed when I was asked to get involved in a charity bike ride in 2011 and thats when my love of cycling started. Little did I know that I had signed up to do probably the most iconic long distance ride in the UK John O Groats to Lands End in 9 days! With a 500 pound bike bought off the internet and just 5 months of training, I set off with 11 guys and with their support and encouragement I managed to stay the course and reach the end. I had some difficult moments but my personal determination to succeed and working as a team got me through it the aim was for us all to finish and in doing so we raised 30,000 pounds for 3 great charities.

The reason why this was so important to me was that at the age of 37, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My illness, and the time I spent making a full recovery, prompted me to re-evaluate my life and to make sure that post treatment I was going to enjoy life to the full and make the most of the journey and what better way to travel than via 2 wheels! And so began my cycling adventures of which you can see from the list below have been many so far with lots more to come I hope.Ive learned lots about long distance cycling along the way which Im always happy to impart to others!

2011
John O Groats to Lands End, UK
2012
Lands End to John O Groats (enjoyed it so much I did it twice!)
2013
UK Coast to Coast in 1 day
2014
Sheffield to Paris (via London)..North Sea Cycle Route (Part 1 Holland, Germany and Denmark)
2015
Trans Australia Crossing (Perth to Sydney via Nullarbor) Christchurch to Auckland, New Zealand. Trans America Crossing (San Francisco to Yorktown Virginia)
2015-2015
along with Numerous trips to French Alps (including 10 classic TdF climbs) Southern Spain, Majorca and Tenerife

One of the joys of being part of WCS is being able to go out with new friends, enjoy the scenery, work hard (sometimes) and have a laugh over a cuppa and slice of cake. Its often difficult to take that first step and sign up for a group ride with complete strangers and we all worry about how far and how fast the group will go and can I cope but as my life experiences have taught me. if you dont have a go, you will never know! So I would encourage anyone out there still thinking about getting out on your bike to do so its never too late. just go for it life is way too short for regrets. Its changed my life and I cant wait for the next adventure.
